A heptathlon is a track and field combined events contest made up of seven events. The name derives from the Greek hepta (seven) and athlon (contest). There are two heptathlons….the women’s heptathlon and the men’s….composed of different events. The men’s heptathlon is older and is held indoors….while the women’s is held outdoors and was introduced in the 1980’s….first appearing in the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984. The Heptathlon consists of the following events…..100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m dash, long jump, javelin throw and 800m run. At the Los Angeles Games….Australian Glynis Nunn won Gold….USA Jackie Joyner won Silver…..and West German Sabine Everts won Bronze.
