This fight featured the # 1 rated WBA welterweight in the world, Roger Stafford verses the # 2 rated WBC welterweight in the world, Milt McCrory…..who would eventually win the WBC welterweight championship on August 13 1983….holding this title until December 6, 1985.
McCrory trained under the legendary Emanuel Steward in the famous Detroit Kronk Gym program….who was nicknamed “Ice Man”….turned pro in 1980 by winning his first 20 bouts….establishing himself as the unified #1 contender for the welterweight title at the time of Sugar Ray Leonard’s retirement. He won the vacant WBC belt….becoming the first Kronk Detroit-born champion….in a rematch with Colin Jones…..whom he had fought to a draw in their initial match-up. McCrory defended the title four times before losing the belt via KO in a unification match with Donald Curry in 1985. He later moved up to the light middleweight division and challenged Mike McCallum for his WBA Light Middleweight title in 1987….but lost via 10th round TKO. He retired in 1991 after losing 2 of his last 4 fights. In his last bout, he scored a first round knockout of Robert Curry….then retired with a 35 wins 4 losses and 2 draws with 25 KO’s.
This fight turned out to be a really good fight that went the distance.
