The IndyCar Monterey Grand Prix or known as “Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey“ due to sponsorship reason….is an IndyCar Series race held at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca near Monterey, California. The event dates back to 1960…. and became an American open wheel race beginning in 1983…..as the race was part of the CART/Champ Car series from 1983 through 2004…..plus, the race went by many different names during that period….like The Cribari Wines 300k (1983)….The Quinn’s Cooler 300k (1984)….The Stroh’s 300k (1985)…..as seen in this video herewith….and The Champion Spark Plug 300 (1986 – 1990) and etc. thru 2004….and after a fifteen-year hiatus…..the event will return in 2019 as part of the IndyCar Series, replacing Sonoma. ESPN’s Gayle Gardner reports on the 1985 Stroh’s 300….Cale Yarborough beats the rest of the field to win the race.
The European Grand Prix was a Formula One event that was introduced during the mid-1980’s….and was held every year from 1993 to 2012….when during these years, the European Grand Prix was held in a country that hosted its own national Grand Prix at a different point in the same season, at a different circuit. The race returned as a one-off in 2016….while being held on a street circuit in Baku, Azerbaijan; this event was renamed to the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in 2017. As covered by ESPN’s Chris Berman in this 1985 SportsCenter video…..Alain Prost secures the Grand Prix Championship title even though he didn’t win the race.
