Auto Racing – 1987 – Indy 500 – Al Trautwig In Race Interview With Ski Racers Phil + Steve Mahre

In this video herewith…..ABC’s roving reporter Al Trrautwig at the 1987 Indy 500, interviews former USA Olympic alpine ski racing champion brothers, Phil and Steve Mahre….who had gotten into auto racing after their skiing careers were over.

Phil Mahre is a former World Cup alpine ski racer…..who is widely regarded as one of the greatest  American skiers of all time…..where his total of 27 World Cup race wins is fourth among Americans, only behind Lindsey Vonn, Mikaela Shiffrin and Bode Miller…..when starting with the 1978 season….brother Phil finished in the top three in the World Cup overall standings for six consecutive seasons….while  winning the title in the final three seasons in 1981, 1982 and 1983. 

Steve Mahre is also a former World Cup alpine ski racer….and younger twin brother by four minutes of Phil.Mahre…..won the silver medal in slalom at the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics….and 0.21 seconds behind his more celebrated brother…..as Steve also won the gold medal in giant slalom at the 1982 World Championships in Schladming, Austria…..with his best finish in the overall standings being third in 1982….and fourth in 1981….while brother Phil was the overall World Cup champion in 1981, 1982 and 1983.
