Tragedy overshadowed the Komfort Koach 200 Friday as Joe Young, a 38- year-old driver from Richmond, Va., died on impact when his car was hit during the Charlotte/Daytona Dash series race at Daytona International Speedway….as an examination showed driver Joe Young died of multiple internal injuries…. including a fracture at the base of the skull.
The six-car accident that occurred on lap 36 of the 80-lap race, apparently was triggered when Karen Schulz lost control of her car….and dropped down to the apron….when trailing cars went spinning trying to avoid her…..and Young’s No. 5 Chevrolet spun and came almost to a stop backward on the track….then Duell Sturgill hit him….while jamming Young’s car into Young’s cockpit. “The ambulance driver here told me he was killed instantly,” Young’s crew chief, Wayne Peregory, told The Richmond News-Leader. “He said Joe was dead when they got to the car.”
