Once Marvin Hagler took the middleweight crown….he proved to be a busy world champion…..defeating future world champion Fulgencio Obelmejias of Venezuela by a knockout in eight rounds….then came former world champ Vito Antuofermo in a rematch by TKO in four rounds….as both matches were fought at the Boston Garden near Hagler’s hometown….which endeared him to Boston fight fans. Syrian born Mustafa Hamsho….who won his shot in an eliminator with Wilfred Benítez…..and would later defeat future world champion Bobby Czyz….became Hagler’s next challenger….when Hamsho put up a lot of resistance….but was finally beaten in 11 tough rounds…..that’s when William “Caveman” Lee lasted only one round….as seen in this fight herewith….and in a rematch in Italy, Obelmejias lasted but five rounds. British Champion Tony Sibson followed in Hagler’s ever-growing list of unsuccessful challengers….as Sibson provided one of the most entertaining….at least to this point in Marvelous Marvin’s career….but he ultimately fell short….while lasting six rounds ….and next came Wilford Scypion…..who only lasted four. By then, Marvelous Marvin Hagler was a staple on HBO, the Pay Per View of its time.
Marvin Hagler is a legend of boxing here at ImaSportsphile…..where we are “tickled pink” to have so much footage of the Marvelous One in our boxing library….and he fought in The Golden Age of Boxing from 1964 to 1995…..when a plethora of legends of boxing fought in just about every category of boxing. He was truly the dominant world middleweight champion during the entire era…..and this video, like all the other Hagler clips that we have….is nothing by “pure gold” in our treasure chest of vintage memories.
