ABC sportscasting legend Keith Jackson hosts this prefight show prior to the 1982 world middleweight title fight between Champ Marvin Hagler verses William Caveman Lee….who became the challenger in this fight when the original challenger, Mickey Goodwin, was scheduled to fight Hagler in San Remo, Italy….but Goodwin hurt his left hand in training….so, since Caveman boxed out of the Kronk Gym like Goodwin, promoters Bob Arum and Emanuel Steward agreed to insert Lee into the fight in place of Goodwin….and both promoters agreed to a fight later that year between Marvin Hagler (Arum stable) vs Thomas Hearns (Kronk stable).
Keith Jackson provides a wonderful insight into the career of Marvelous Marvin Hagler…..who, as a result of being so good, could never get a title fight until his nearly 50th fight…..so, to say that that Marvelous paid his dues is a significant understatement.
We at ImaSportsphile consider Marvelous Marvin Hagler to be one of the legends of boxing who fought during The Golden Age of Boxing from 1964 to 1995…..for this was an era in boxing that was “laced with legends” in darn near every weight division…..with multiple divisions having multiple legends…..ie: the welterweight division that showcased boxing legends like Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns and Wilfred Benetiz……which was a division that also feature such great boxers as Donald Curry, Milt McCrory, Vinny Pazienza, Marlon Starling, Lloyd Honeyghan, Mark Breland et al. The truth be known, there was a plethora of outstanding boxers throughout The Golden Age of Boxing….but in the middleweight division, there was truly only one….Marvelous Marvin Hagler.
