Boxing – 1985 – HBO PreFight Special – WBC World Heavyweight Title – Larry Holmes VS Michael Spinks

DOG COMMENTARY:

The fight was billed as “Vindication in Vegas”…..as Holmes was a 7½ to 5 betting favorite….when Spinks’ purse was $2 million and Holmes’ was $1.125 million….where the tickets were priced at $500, $300, $200, $100 and $50….for a crowd of 8,328….while the fight was televised live on HBO with Barry Tompkins, Sugar Ray Leonard and Larry Merchant at the mikes.

“The last time, I worked on becoming a heavyweight,”….saying Spinks before this 2nd fight…..but “For this fight, I started as a heavyweight and just worked on improving what beat Larry the last time.”  Shortly before the fight, Holmes said the judges “must have been drunk” when they scored his first fight in favor of Spinks.

Anyway, the drama that unfolded prior to this the 2nd fight….was made for TV drama at its best….cuz many boxing pundits like this lil ole chiweenie Sportsphile….are of the opinion that the only way a challenger takes any Champ’s title is by KO…TKO….or “pretty face challenger vs eyes swollen shut, bloody mess champion” at the end of the fight….so, many like us at ImaSportsphile don’t believe Spinks won the 1st fight….therefore, attitudes and opinions like ours were at play in the drama that built around Fight II….which makes this video MUST SEE TV for any boxing fan.
