Boxing – 1985 – Larry Merchant PostFight Interview With Michael Spinks After Defeating Larry Holmes

In this post fight interview of newly crowned IBF Heavyweight Champion Michael Spinks….after defeating longtime heavyweight champ Larry Holmes in their first fight…..was conducted by HBO’s Larry Merchant….who typically was a fairly good interviewer….but in this interview, he asks some fairly “off the wall” questions like…“Do you think your training for this fight will revolutionize boxing training?”….which was directly related to the training that Spinks went through to transition from a light heavyweight boxer to a heavyweight boxer…..as it was a unique approach….but it had absolutely no impact on the way smaller fighters trained in the future to move up in weight class.

Throughout the entire interview…..promoter Don King and Spink’s trainer Butch Lewis can be seen close to Spinks and Merchant….as these were two men in boxing who simply did not like each other….and were always at war with each other.

As we have expressed often in our boxing posts…..we at ImaSportsphile are of the opinion that there are ONLY three ways that a challenger can take a title from a champion….by knockout….by technical knockout…..or by seriously disfiguring the champ’s face….and Michael Spinks did neither of these to Larry Holmes…..so, The Easton Assassin should NEVER have lost his title….which would have made this interview obsolete.
