Gene Hatcher (born June 28, 1959) is a former boxer who was world light welterweight champion….whose nickname was “Mad Dog.” After winning his 1st two fights….Hatcher faced WBAlight welterweight champion Johnny Bumphus on June 1, 1984 in what Ring magazine called its “Upset of the Year,” ….when Hatcher scored an eleventh-round technical knockout over Bumphus. When Hatcher knocked Bumphus down….he slipped and fell on a follow-up attempt…. then he threw Bumphus down to the mat when both fighters clinched. A post-fight melee in the ring ensued after the stoppage.
Hatcher’s first defense was against Ubaldo Sacco in December of the same year….when he won a fifteen-round decision….however in their rematch in July 1985….Sacco, however, won their July 1985 rematch (and title) with a 11th round TKO win in Italy….when the fight was stopped by the referee because of a Hatcher cut. In Hatcher’s next – and last chance at another world crown….he lost by knockout in 45 seconds to Lloyd Honeyghan in August 1987 with Honeyghan’s WBC and IBF welterweight belts being at stake. Hatcher ended his 14 year professional career in 1995 with a record of 32 wins with 23 by KO and 7 losses.
Ubaldo Néstor Sacco (28 July 1955 – 28 May 1997) was an Argentine boxer….who was the Super Lightweight champion of the world.,,, known as “Uby”. Sacco turned pro in 1978 and won the World Boxing Association light welterweight title by TKO over Gene Hatcher in 1985. He lost the belt the following year to Patrizio Oliva by decision. Uby’s professional career began in 1978 and ended in 1986….while compiling a record of 47 wins with 23 by KO and just 4 losses.
