Boxing – 1987 – ABC Wrap-up Show – IBF Welterwt Title Fight – Johnny Bumphus Vs Lloyd Honeyghan

Johnny ‘Bump City’ Bumphus (born 17 August 1960) is a former professional boxer….who was world light welterweight champion….who began his professional career as a hot prospect….after winning his first 22 fights….including the vacant WBA Light Welterweight Title….with a decision win over Lorenzo Luis Garcia in 1984….which was a belt that Bumphus lost to Gene Hatcher in June 1984 in Buffalo, New York….as Hatcher scored an 11th-round TKO that had Hatcher knocking Bumphus down….then slipping and falling on a follow-up attempt….followed by throwing Bumphus down to the mat when both fighters clinched.  A post-fight melee in the ring then ensued….as Hatcher was celebrating in triumph while the now-deposed champion was slugging away in frustration. The fight was named as Ring magazine’s upset of the year for 1984.

In 1987, Bumphus took on Lloyd Honeyghan for the WBC and IBF Welterweight Title….but lost with 2nd round TKO….which sent Bump City into retirement with a record of 29 wins with 2 losses.

Lloyd Honeyghan (born 22 April 1960) is a British former professional boxer….who competed from 1980 to 1995…..and reigned as the undisputed welterweight champion from 1986 to 1987….while holding the WBC, Ring magazine, and lineal welterweight titles twice between 1986 and 1989.  In addition, he held the European, British, and Commonwealth welterweight titles between 1983 and 1985….as well as the Commonwealth light-middleweight title from 1993 to 1994.
