Boxing – Lightweight Bout – Alexis Arguello VS Cornelius Boza Edwards

DOG COMMENTARY:

Alexis Argüello was known by the ring name El Flaco Explosivo (The Explosive Thin-Man )….a boy was he ever the explosive thin man….as Bone Daddy puts it…..Arguello has a “stun punch” that literally stunned his opponents when he landed it….as they would just be stunned and definitely going down….but not yet….cuz the stun that Arguello applied took fighters a few seconds to realize they were knocked out.

After watching multiple El Flaco Explosivo fights…..I have put him in the legend category of the golden age of boxing…..as Arguello was a Nicaraguan professional boxer and politician….who was a world champion in three different weight divisions….having held the WBA featherweight title….the WBC super featherweight….and WBC lightweight titles. He has regularly been cited as one of the greatest fighters of his era, having never lost any of his world titles in the ring, instead relinquishing them each time in pursuit of titles in higher weight classes. After his retirement from boxing, Argüello became active in Nicaraguan politics and in November 2008 he was elected mayor of Managua, the nation’s capital city.

Arguello is ranked 20th on The Ring magazine’s list of “100 greatest punchers of all time” ….being was voted by the Associated Press in 1999 as the #1 junior lightweight of the 20th century.

Cornelius Boza Edwards was a Ugandan professional boxer in the Lightweight division….held the WBC super featherweight champion. Edwards emigrated from Uganda to England….where he lived for a long period. Currently, he lives in the United States, where he trains other boxers.

Cornelius Boza-Edwards won the WBC world jr. lightweight title from “Bazooka” Limón….with a fifteen round decision in 1981 at Stockton, California….this after Limón, a Mexican, had made his now infamous comment…”You know what happens to British boxers when they face Mexicans” comment in a reference to the fight between Lupe Pintor and Johnny Owen, after which Owen died.

Boza-Edwards defeated Bobby Chacon by technical knockout in the fourteenth round in his first defense….then lost the title to Rolando Navarrete by knockout in round five.  Boza-Edwards also fought with, and lost against, other world champions such as his rematch with Bobby Chacon….then came this non-title fight seen herewith in this video against Alexis Argüello….whom Bone Daddy calls one of the really outstanding boxers of the golden age of boxing.

After a slow opening, Boza Edwards began to press the fight, while Arguello would make his opponent miss and then counter with short punches. After some close rounds, Arguello began to overwhelm Boza Edwards in round 7 with clean punches. Arguello continued his assault in round 8, and a weary Boza Edwards finished the round on wobbly legs. Boza Edwards would retire in his corner prior to round 9.

I have said this before…..but I just love the lightweight to welterweight divisions of boxing…..cuz they always give the fan an action fight…..and all fight fans just love action.
