Cycling – 1986 – Tour De France – Stage 18 – Briancon To L’Alpe D’Huez – Featuring USA Greg LeMond

In the 18th stage of the 1986 Tour de France….FRA Benard Hinault attacked several times….but every time he was rejoined by USA Greg LeMond and others….when after an attack on the Col du Télégraphe….as SUI Urs Zimmermann was unable to follow.  LeMond and Hinault only had CAN Steve Bauer and ESP Pello Ruiz-Cabestany with them….but on the climb of the Croix de Fer….those two could not follow….so it was just LeMond and Hinault….as they stayed together until the finish…..where LeMond allowed Hinault to win. The margin with Zimmermann (third to finish on that stage) was more than 5 minutes….and it was clear that Zimmermann could no longer win the Tour.

In this video herewith, CBS Phil Liggett describes the route for Stage 18…..as it takes the riders on three challenging climbs up three different mountains….with the final climb being up L’Alpe D’Huez…..the highest mountain in the French Alps…..while his broadcast partner John Tesh covers the competitive relationship between FRA Bernard Hinault and USA Greg LeMond….as this video has some of the more dramatic visuals of this incredible day in the Alps for all the riders.
