In the 99th year of The Statue of Liberty in the USA….Strohs Brewing Company….the maker of Strohs beer….held a series of distance running competitions around the country to raise money for the restoration of Lady Liberty…..a project that in May of 1982, President Ronald Reagan appointed Lee Iacocca to head up a private sector effort to restore the Statue of Liberty…..as fundraising began for the $87 million restoration under a public/private partnership between the National Park Service and the The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc…..with the intention of having the symbol of liberty around the world restored by her 100th birthday in 1988.
Many corporate and private sponsors of the project created different ways for the American public to participate in this project…..as Strohs did with their Run for Liberty project…..as seen in this video…..with commentary by legendary sportscaster Curt Gowdy.
