Figure Skating – 1987 – Profiles Of USA Debi Thomas + DDR Katarina Witt Prior To World Championship

Debi Thomas is an American former figure skater and physician…..who is the 1986 World  World champion…..the 1988 Olympic bronze medalist…..and a two-time U.S. national champion…. and all accomplished while she was a pre-med student at Stanford University.   Her rivalry with East Germany’s Katarina Witt at the 1988 Calgary Olympics was known as the Battle of the Carmens.

Katarina Witt is a retired former East German figure skater…..who won two Olympic gold medals for East Germany….with the first being at the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics….while the second was won at the 1988 Calgary Olympics….as well as being a four-time World Champion (1984, 1985, 1987, 1988)….and a two-time World silver medalist (1982, 1986).  Between 1984 and 1988, Witt won ten golds from eleven major international events….with two Olympics, four out of five World championships and six European championships. Her competitive record makes her one of the most successful figure skaters of all time.
