DOG ASIDE:

Since its inception in 1954, Sports Illustrated magazine has annually presented the Sportsperson of the Year award to “the athlete or team whose performance that year most embodies the spirit of sportsmanship and achievement.”  Both Americans and non-Americans are eligible, though in the past the vast majority of winners have been from the United States. Both men and women have won the award, originally called “Sportsman of the Year” and renamed “Sportswoman of the Year” or “Sportswomen of the Year” when applicable; it is currently known as “Sportsperson of the Year.”

Each year there are nominees from each of the major sports categories….baseball, basketball, boxing, football, olympics, hockey, tennis, etc…..that are featured in a televised special show which was hosted by Merlin Olsen in 1984…..and the show is broken into different segments in which each categories’ outstanding performers is highlighted. In the segment featured in this video herewith are the football players who excelled during the past year…..which included Chicago Bears running back Walter Payton…..Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino…..New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor…..and Boston College quarterback Doug Flutie…..which makes highlights of each of these nominees well worth the watch of this video.
