Austin, Texas has always provided many opportunities in the world of sports to satisfy a certifiable Sportsphile’s appetite…..I mean….could one ask for more than to have The University of Texas in your backyard…..while simply exploding with sporting events of all kinds….by top shelf collegiate athletes performing in some of the finest sports facilities in the world….then there’s AAA baseball at Dell Diamond in Round Rock…..and there is top shelf high school sports all around the area….while back in the day from 1978 to 1983, there was professional golf in the form of the origination of a three day tournament that featured golfers over 50…..so, when the “ole timers” took to the golf course at Onion Creek Country Club…..where the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf Tournament was played….as this event was subsequently the genisis of the PGA Senior’s Tour.
During the 1st five years of the tournament from 1978 to 1983….the format for play was paired teams in a best ball competition for 54 holes on Friday, Saturday and Sunday….and the 1979 Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf Tournament came down to Art Wall + Tommy Bolt battling with Sam Snead + Don January….and the “ole timers” showed the world they could still play highly competitive golf and put on a show…..which makes this video well worth the price of admission to watch.
