Golf – 1983 – Highlights Of The 1st 5 Yrs Of The Legends Of Golf Tournament At Onion Creek CC Austin

During the five years from 1978 to 1983, the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf Tournament took place each year at Onion Creek Country Club in Austin, Texas…..as the tournament served at the inaugural golf tournament on the PGA Seniors Tour….for this was something that our Bone Daddy, the original Sportsphile, looked forward too each year…..partly because of being able to see all the older PGA players like Gene Sarazen, Bryon Nelson, Jimmy Demaret, Sam Snead, Art Wall, Julius Boros, Don January, Bob Goalby and BD’s favorite “Texas home boy golfer” the Mysterious Mr. X,  Miller Barber, from Denton, Texas.

The truth of the matter was that Bone Daddy would never miss following Barber around the Legends Course….and he tells a story of climbing a tree on the 15th fairway….a long 524 yard dogleg left…..and as his story goes, the big oak tree that he and his buddy climbed was about 270 yards off the tee…..and when Mysterious Mr. X came to the tee….that is when he and his buddy Woodfin, another huge Mr. X fan, dropped a big sign from the low-lying tree limb they were sitting on that read….MR. X, HIT THIS SIGN AND THE BEER IS ON US….and low and behold, Miller Barber proceeded to put a hole in the middle of the sign…..and when he got to his ball, he looked up at Bone Daddy and Woodfin….and simply said….see you at the 19th hole. So, they ended up spending a hour….while buying a 6 pack for their fave, Mysterious Mr. X.

Any way you cut the pie….this video seen herewith….is priceless to us here at ImaSportsphile cuz our Bone Daddy got to spend a great afternoon listening to the tall tales from a Texas golf legend…..which makes this video a priceless jewel in our treasure chest of vintage memories here on our site.
