The 1984 Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year Awards Show was hosted by NFL sportscaster Merlin Olsen…..as he introduced the candidates for the award from golf…..which included LPGA Patty Sheehan as winner of the Women’s US Open….along with PGA’s Ben Crenshaw, who won the green jacket at the Masters Tournament…..plus, Seve Ballesteros, the winner of the 1984 British Open….. and Super Mex Lee Trevino, who at age 44, won the PGA Championship, just a mere 10 years after winning his last major in golf…..as each of these folks were worth of being recognized by Sports Illustrated for being deserving candidates in their sport of golf…..albeit the feats of gold medal winning USA Olympians Mary Lou Retton (gymnastics) and Edwin Moses (track 400m hurdles) simply pushed them ahead of the tremendous feats achieved by the professional golfers in 1984.
