The 1985 Masters Tournament was the 49th Masters Tournament….which was held April 11 – 14 at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia…..as Bernhard Langer won the first of his two major championships, both Masters, two strokes ahead of runners-up Seve Ballesteros, Raymond Floyd, and Curtis Strange. A score of 69 (−3) on Saturday put Floyd in the lead after 54 holes at 212 (−4)….with Strange being one stroke back…..while Langer and Ballesteros were two strokes back….and despite an opening round 80….Curtis Strange led by three strokes with six holes to play in the final round….but made key bogeys at 13 and 15 when his attempts to reach both greens in two shots found water instead…..as he would finish two strokes back….as It was Strange’s only top-5 finish at Augusta….albeit he won consecutive U.S. Opens in 1988 and 1989.
Langer, age 27 and dressed in red….birdied four of the last seven holes to win the green jacket….as only the second champion from Europe….he had consecutive rounds of 68 (−4) on the weekend to become the first winner of a major from Germany….for Langer would win a second green jacket eight years later in 1993.
This video covers 3rd round play…..which led off with Craig Stadler, Payne Stewart and Tom Watson being tied for the lead at -4 after the 2nd round…..followed by Gary Hallberg at -3 and Gary Koch at -2….with Seve Ballesteros, Lee Trevino, Ray Floyd, Sandy Lyle and Bruce Lietske all within striking distance at -1. Round 3 would end up with Ray Floyd leading by one stroke at -4…..followed by Curtis Strange at -3…. with Seve Ballesteros and Bernhard Langer at -2…..and Lee Trevino, Bruce Lietzke and Gary Koch at -1….. which set up for an exciting final round of the 1985 Masters Tournament.
