Larry Mize is an American professional golfer who played on the PGA Tour and currently plays on the Champions Tour…..who is best known for one career-defining shot….which was a chip from off the green at the 11th hole at Augusta to win the playoff for the 1987 Masters Tournament…..as his only major title. Mize turned professional in 1980…..and from thereafter he finished in the top 125 on the money list….which is the level needed to retain membership of the tour…..for 20 seasons from 1982 to 2001. His first PGA Tour win was the 1983 Danny Thomas Memphis Classic.
As seen in this video herewith…..Mize is in a sudden death playoff with Greg Norman at the 1986 Kemper Open…..as both players make par on the 1st sudden death hole….whereas Mize would eventually lose to a Norman par on the 6th playoff hole.
Greg Norman is an Australian professional golfer and entrepreneur….who spent 331 weeks as the world’s # 1 Official World Golf Rankings ranked golfer in the 1980’s and 1990’s. He has won 88 professional tournaments….which includes 20 PGA Tour tournaments….of which two were majors…. with both being the British Open Championships in 1986 and 1993….as Norman also earned thirty top-10 finishes and was the runner-up 8 times in majors throughout his career. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2001 with the highest percentage of votes (80%) of any golfer to date. In a reference to his blond hair, size, aggressive golf style and his birthplace’s native coastal animal, Norman’s nickname is “The Great White Shark” ….which was more often shortened to just “The Shark“….which he earned after his play at the 1981 Masters.
