On Sunday, June 1, 1986 during Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics verses the Houston Rockets….CBS Sports would break into their live game telecast to bring hole by hole updates of the sudden death playoff at the Kemper Open between Larry Mize and Greg Norman…..so this was the 4th interruption update….as the two golfers would eventually battle through six extra holes before a winner was decided.
The reason that CBS chose to interrupt their live NBA broadcast was because they had carried the live coverage of the final round prior to their NBA Finals broadcast…..and since the golf tournament extended beyond regular play…..that is why CBS Sports continued to keep their television fans abreast of the happenings in sudden death…..so, broadcaster Pat Summerall stayed behind the mike at the tournament until a winner had been decided.
