DOG ASIDE: 

Round 2 of this US Open took place on Friday, June 19, 1987 at the Olympic Golf Club in San Francisco, CA with Tom Watson and Mark Wiebe at -3….with a one stroke lead over John Cook, Jack Nicklaus, Bernhard Langer, Jim Thorpe and Tsuneyuki Nakajima at -2….followed by Ben Crenshaw, Bob Eastwood, Larry Mize and Scott Simpson two strokes back at -1….as only 11 players in a field of 156 were under par….with 11 former champions of the US Open in the field….and only 4 would make the cut at the end of this 2nd Round….as the Olympic course would prove to be a serious challenge throughout this tournament. 

The Lake Course at Olympic has been recognized by Golf Magazine in its list of the Top 100 Golf Courses in America….and has also been recognized in Golf Week’s of Americas 100 Best Classical Courses. 

The yardage of the Lake Course is 7,060 yards from the championship tees….with a course rating of 75.7 and a slope rating of 143.  Bent grass covers the greens. The fairways are a rye and poa annua grass combination….while the roughs also have a bit of bluegrass mixed in. 

Olympic Golf Course proved to be a real challenge for the pros on this day….which makes for MUST SEE TV for any and all golf enthusiasts.
