Gymnastics – 1980 – Exhibition In NYC – Mens Floor Exercise Finals – USA Peter Kormann

Peter Kormann is a retired American gymnast and gymnastics coach….who became the first American to medal in competition against the Soviets….when he won a bronze medal in the men’s floor competition …. which was also the first Olympic medal of any type won by an American gymnast in 44 years.

Kormann competed for Southern Connecticut State University under coach Abie Grossfeld….when in 1977, he won the Nissen Award (the “Heisman” of men’s gymnastics). Peter went on to coach at the United States Naval Academy, the Ohio State University and was named head coach of the USA men’s team from 1996 to 2001.

We here at ImaSportsphile are fortunate to have this particular video….for Peter Kormann’s floor exercise was his strongest discipline by a long shot…..he was truly world class before any other American gymnast…..as it is just another “nuggett of gold” in our treasure chest of vintage memories here on our site….cuz this video goes with the one we have of him winning bronze in Innsbruck, Austria.
