Gymnastics – 1985 – Special – Heroes Story Of The 1984 Olympic Gold Medal USA Mens Gymnastics Team

The results of the men’s team all-around competition….which was one of eight events for male competitors in artistic gymnastics at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles….when the compulsory and optional rounds took place on July 29 and 31 at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion.  The final outcome of the men’s team all-around competition saw the USA win the gold medal for the 1st time in US Olympic history….while consisting of a team comprised by Bart Conner, Tim Daggett, Mitch Gaylord, James Hartung, Scott Johnson and Peter Vidmar…..all of whom found themselves to be “virtually nobodies” going into the competition….and waking up the next day after the competition ended as “absolute overnight heroes”….when the final score for each team was determined by combining all of the scores earned by the team on each apparatus during the compulsory and optional rounds. If all six gymnasts on a team performed a routine on a single apparatus during compulsories or optionals….then only the five highest scores on that apparatus counted toward the team total.

This video provides a wonderful look at how these six USA men’s gymnasts became the talk of the town for the year that followed their victory….as it illuminates how dreams can really come true.
