
DOG COMMENTARY:
This 1986 Breeders’ Cup was the 3rd edition of the cup….and was held for the first time under the majestic San Gabriel Mountains at Santa Anita Park. A record Breeders’ Cup crowd of 69,155 were on hand to witness the 4-year-old Lady’s Secret go wire to wire to win the Distaff and become the first Breeders’ Cup champion to be named Horse of the Year….while Skywalker, ridden by Hall of Fame jockey Laffit Pincay, Jr., led the Breeders’ Cup Classic from start to finish. A record total of $34,884,790 was wagered across North America on the entire race day program.
The seven races of the day were won as follows…..
Classic was won by Skywalker with Lafitt Pincay and trained by Michael Whittingham of Oak Cliff Stable
Juvenile was won by Capote with Lafitt Pincay and trained by D Wayne Lucas for B A Beal, L R French and Eugene Klein
Distaff was won by Lady’s Secret with Pat Day and trained by D Wayne Lucas for Eugene Klein
Turf was won by Manila with Jose Santos and trained by Lionel Jolley for Bradley M. Shannon
Mile was won by Last Tycoon with Y Saint-Martin and trained by Robert Collet for Richard C Strauss
Juvenile Fillies won by Brave Raj with Pat Valenzuela and trained by Mike Stute for Dolly Green
Sprint won by Smile with Jorge Vasquez and trained by Frank Schulhofer for Frances A Genter Stable
