Mike Huckabee giving insight into who both men is worthy of watching…..as a result of both men being from the school of Mother, God and Country…..plus, both are advocates of independent thinking.  This video also is a good example of why we have chosen here at ImaSportsPhile as our core content to be sports, music and comedy…..simply because they all three are universal languages that all humans understand….. as evidenced by the songwriter and the politician playing music together.

Keith had made numerous trips to the Middle East, starting in 2002, to perform for those serving in the U.S. military. “My father was a soldier. He taught his kids to respect veterans”, said Keith. “It’s that respect and the thank-you that we have a military that’s in place and ready to defend our nation; our freedom.”

In 2004, Keith called himself “a conservative Democrat who is sometimes embarrassed for his party”…..as many Dixiecrats were…..for they were the Southern conservative democrats dating way back in our American history…..and Toby Keith was one of those folks…..as he endorsed the re-election of President George W. Bush in the 2004 presidential election….. while performing at a Dallas, Texas, rally on the night before the election….. when on the other hand, Keith also endorsed Democrat Dan Boren in his successful run in Oklahoma’s 2nd congressional district…..and was good friends with former Democratic New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson.  In a January 2007 interview with Newsday, Keith was asked whether he supported the Iraq War…..to which he responded with “Never did”…..and said he favors setting a time limit on the campaign. He also said, “I don’t apologize for being patriotic… If there is something socially incorrect about being patriotic and supporting your troops, then they can kiss my ass on that, because I’m not going to budge on that at all.  And that has nothing to do with politics. Politics is what’s killing America.”   The following video is one of my very favorites within the 100+ videos within this post herewith…..and they are all about a truly great American and human being…..which is evidenced by his granting a “Make A Wish” to Trevor Scott…..a 10 year old boy who had a failing liver and was critically waiting for a transplant…..when his wish after being chosen by the Make A Wish foundation…..was to sing “American Soldier” with Toby Keith…..and this video shows you all you ever really need to know about the immortal Toby Keith…..and his dedication to Mother, God and Country.

In April 2008, Keith said that Barack Obama “looks like a great speaker and a great leader. And I think you can learn on your feet in there, so I don’t hold people responsible for not having a whole bunch of political background in the House and Senate.”  His remarks continued, “I think [John] McCain is a great option too.” In August 2008, he called Obama “the best Democratic candidate we’ve had since Bill Clinton”.  Also in October 2008, Keith told CMT that he had left the Democratic Party…..and that he re-registered as an independent saying, “My party that I’ve been affiliated with all these years doesn’t stand for anything that I stand for anymore”, he said. “They’ve lost any sensibility that they had, and they’ve allowed all the kooks in. So I’m going independent.”  He also told CMT that he would likely vote for the Republican ticket.

In March 2009, Keith received the Johnny “Mike” Spann Memorial Semper Fidelis Award during a New York ceremony held by the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation.  The trophy is named for the CIA operative (and former Marine Corps captain) who was the 1st U.S. casualty in the war in Afghanistan. “Spending time with our soldiers around the world is something I’ve always regarded as a privilege and honor”, he said. “I’m certainly happy to accept this award, but I won’t forget for a second who’s really doing the heavy lifting to keep this country safe. And that’s why I’ll keep going back and spending time with those good folks every chance I get.”

On March 24, 2001, Keith’s father, H.K. Covel, was killed in a car accident….. as that event and the September 11 attacks in 2001 prompted Keith to write the song “Courtesy of the Red, White, & Blue”…..which is a song about his father’s patriotism and faith in the United States…..and was originally intended only for live shows…..but according to Keith, following a performance for military leadership, Commandant of the Marine Corps James L. Jones told Keith it was his “duty as an American citizen” to record the song.  As the lead single from the album Unleashed (2002), “Courtesy of the Red, White, & Blue” peaked at # 1 on the July 20, 2002, Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.  ABC invited Keith to perform on a 2002 Fourth of July concert it was producing…..but according to Keith, he was dropped from the show after host Peter Jennings heard the song and rejected it…..when Keith was further quoted as saying “Isn’t he Canadian?”…..and “I bet Dan Rather wouldn’t kick me off his show.”…..when Rather responded “And I’m not gonna be a hypocrite, you wouldn’t want me to. I like Peter, he’s a good guy.” ABC, however, stated that it was the network that did not want to begin the show with an angry song.  Jennings later stated that, while the situation was regrettable, opening the show with the song “probably wouldn’t set the right tone.”

Keith had a public feud with the Dixie Chicks over the song “Courtesy of the Red, White, & Blue” in 2002…..as well as comments they made about President George W. Bush on stage during a concert in London in March 2003…..when their lead singer, Natalie Maines, publicly stated that Keith’s song was “ignorant, and it makes country music sound ignorant”.  Keith responded by displaying a backdrop at his concerts showing a doctored photo of Maines with Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.  On May 21, 2003, Maines wore a T-shirt with the letters “FUTK” on the front at the Academy of Country Music Awards…..while a spokesperson for the Dixie Chicks said that the acronym stood for “Friends United in Truth and Kindness”…..as many, including host Vince Gill, took it to be a shot at Keith (“Fuck You Toby Keith”) …..then in an October 2004 appearance on Real Time with Bill Maher, Maines finally confessed that it was indeed a shot at Keith…..and that she “thought that nobody would get it.”  In August 2003, Keith’s representation publicly declared he was done feuding with Maines “because he’s realized there are far more important things to concentrate on.”…..when Keith was referring specifically to the terminal illness of a former bandmate’s daughter, Allison Faith Webb…..however, he continued to refuse to say Maines’s name…..and claimed that the doctored photo was intended to express his opinion that Maines’s criticism was an attempt to squelch Keith’s free speech.   Since ImaSportsPhile is a very anti-political entity…..cuz sports at its core value, has absolutely nothing to do with politics…..that’s because it is about things like fair play, competition, achievement, losing and winning and the love of doing it…..which is what Toby Keith is like all the way to the core of his soul.  And anyway, from the way we see the feud…..it was all energized and driven by another liberal musician and/or entertainer who was bought out by the same powers that in professional sports…..so, we decided that a great Toby Keith music video of him performing his song “Little Too Late” from his White Trash With Money album.

Christmas albums

  • Christmas to Christmas (1995)

  • A Classic Christmas (2007)

Toby Keith’s Christmas Albums are both uniquely wonderful…..as his “Christmas to Christmas” album consists of a dozen original Christmas songs written by him…..which up until this post, we have never heard…..and after listening to this album over and over since its discovery…..which we believe is because its songs for some reason haven’t gotten much air time, because the entire album is wonderful…..as evidenced by the 1st five songs below…..whereas, the songs from his “A Classic Christmas” album features all Toby Keith renditions of classic Christmas carols…..which when sung by Toby Keith make each song like listening to it for the 1st time.

I’m not as sad as I once was, but I’m sad once as I ever was…..cuz at my age, when somebody I always liked dies, I feel much better about embracing my own end being 77 years old…..as it much easier to accept with grace when you know those you love and liked will be where you’re going.  A strong man knows he has strength for the journey…..but a man of strength knows it is in the journey where he will become strong.  Don’t fear death, its as natural as life…..and Toby Keith understood that simple fact…..which made his fight with cancer such a cruel dichotomy in that someone who did and gave so much to others with this horrible disease fell to it himself…..but he was such a deserving soul…..cuz the kids that were taken too young were there to greet Toby upon his arrival to Heaven.  Toby you were an incredible songwriter, singer and entertainer…..with that romping driving beat like Waylon Jennings…..plus the energy and showmanship of Hank Williams Jr…..along with the ability to tell beautiful stories like Kris Kristofferson …..but most of all for sharing that rebellious outlaw attitude…..while standing your ground for your beliefs and music…..and doing things your way that only southern boys can understand.  Toby Keith had all the traits that made this country great…..and was a significant symbol of this country to the world…..as a great guy and true patriot…..who did a great deal for a lot of people…..plus 11 overseas tours for veterans in Iraq and Afghanistan …..and when his band member’s daughter died of cancer, he stared a center for children’s cancer.  Keith was so much more than a country star…..who embodied traits that were not necessarily those of other superstars…..as Toby was a courageous man, humble, full of faith…..and a truly decated American Patriot!  He was a one of a kind genuinely good, through and through.  He’s the guy that touched our hearts and stirred our souls with his songs and his actions.  You were a cowboy….a patriot humanitarian of the highest order….. and a dedicated family man…..with an undeniable ability to tell a story with your songs.  Since the USA is in the throws of one of the most important Presidential elections in the history of our country…..and for that reason, Toby Keith would have made one hell of a great President…..cuz if anyone could pull it off it would have been him…..as he loved and accepted everyone as they were…..and was the quintessential modern American cowboy.  Toby’s song “How Do You Like Me Now?” is really about the journey to success….. while seeing people come from true intentions…..who once you have become accomplished, just seem to forget where they came from…..but not Toby Keith…..cuz he understood that God game him the talents to absolutely compose and sing when it comes to the lyrics and his songs.  He certainly gives new meaning to the phrase be all you can be and remain humble while doing so…..for he was “a keeper” from all regards.  We celebrate you and all that you have done and left the world with…..as a celebrity that truly loved God and his country…..who took a stand for both.  We admired and loved you Big Dawg…..and until we all “Raise up our glasses against evil forces, singing Whiskey for my Men, Beer for my Horses”.

Publisher’s Note:
Bringing this post to all the folks that visit our site because of Toby Keith’s video life history gives me tremendous satisfaction because Wayman, Toby and I are all three brothers of other mothers.  We are all what is known as “West Texas Okies”…..as those guys who grew up in a tough land…..with a bunch of cows and cowboys…..and what we all know as “Black Gold” under the ground…..who all believe in Mother, God and Country…..as guys who love sports and music…..  The simple fact remains that all three of us are kindred spirits…..which allowed me to have an instantaneous realization while viewing the following Toby Keith video musical tribute to his lifelong friend, Wayman Tisdale…..who was God’s angel that He put in Toby’s life to prepare him for the journey that he would eventually take leading up to his death…..as a Heavenly Warrior Angel here on Earth for Toby (and many other folks that Wayman Tisdale’s inspirational life touched).
