DOG COMMENTARY:
The 1985 Major League Baseball All-Star Game was the 56th playing of the game….which is annually played between the All-Stars of the National League and the All-Stars of the American League. The game was played on July 16, 1985, in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota….the home of the Minnesota Twins.
The National League won the game 6–1….with the winning pitcher being LaMarr Hoyt of the San Diego Padres…. while the losing pitcher was Jack Morris of the Detroit Tigers….as Hoyt also won the game’s MVP award. The National League was managed by the Padres’ Dick Williams….while the American League was managed by Sparky Anderson of the Tigers….with Williams being backed by coaches Jim Frey and Bob Lillis….as Anderson was aided by coaches Bobby Cox and Dick Howser.
The teams’ honorary captains each starred in the 1965 All-Star game….which was also held in Minnesota….with Twins 3B Harmon Killebrew for the AL….and Dodgers P Sandy Koufax for the NL….who earned the NL win in the game two decades ago….while Killebrew hit the AL’s second home run.
This 1985 version of the All Star Classic featured sixteen (16) future Hall of Fame Members in 3B Paul Molitor, OF Tim Raines, 2B Rynne Sandberg, P Bert Blyleven, 3B Paul Molitor, C Carlton Fisk, P Nolan Ryan, OF Jim Rice, P Goose Gossage, OF Dave Winfield, SS Cal Ripken Jr., 1B Eddie Murray, 3B George Brett, OF Rickie Henderson, SS Ozzie Smith and OF Tony Gwynn…..for any game featuring that many HOF players is must see TV.
