There are so many great voices of baseball….Jack Brickhouse, Red Barber, Vin Scully, Dizzy Dean, Tim McCarver, Joe Garagiola, Jack Buck, Al Michaels, et al…..but none compare with this lil ole chiweenie Sportsphile’s favorite….and the same the guy doing MLB’s 1st rapp song on this video herewith…..the one and only Mel Allen…..who albeit is known best as the Voice of the New York Yankees….whose games he called from through the 1940’s, 1950’s, 1960’s and into the 1970’s….and although Bone Daddy, the original Sportsphile, was a huge Yankees fan….evidenced by his incredible Yankees baseball card collection…. just partially seen in our Memorabilia Section here at ImaSportsphile….but, even more so, I love Mel Allen for his wonderful work on This Week In Baseball….which was a syndicated weekly MLB highlights program that he started in 1977…..and continued until his death in 1996.
On this particular clip from a This Week in Baseball from the mid- 1980’s….Mel Allen proceeds to perform baseball’s first rap music…..cuz they made him do it…..which was really a piece of music artistry that was way before its time…..but is “pure gold” in our treasure chest of vintage memories here at ImaSportsphile, so, CLICK and ENJOY a truly rare treat from the great Mel Allen.
