Alan Dean Ashby (born July 8, 1951) is an American former professional baseball player and current radio and television sports commentator….who played as a catcher in Major League Baseball for the Cleveland Indians, Toronto Blue Jays and Houston Astros between 1973 and 1989. He was the catcher for two Astros teams that won division pennants. Ashby recaptured the Astros starting catching job in 1986….then helped guide the team’s pitching staff to lead the National League in strikeouts…while finishing the season with the league’s second best team earned run average….when on September 25, he tied a National League record when he caught his third career no-hitter….as Mike Scott pitched a no-hitter against the San Francisco Giants to clinch the National League West division title for Houston. In the 1986 National League Championship Series…Ashby hit a 2 RBI homerun in Game 4 of the NLCS….as seen in this video interview herewith.
