This ABC Sports pregame show for Game 5 of the National League Championship Series between the New York Mets verses the Houston Astros took place a day after it was originally scheduled on October 13, 1986 due to rain delay. The 1986 NLCS was carried live on ABC Sports with Keith Jackson and Tim McCarver behind the mikes for the call of the game.
This 1986 NLCS between the Astros and the Mets carries significant memories to those of us at ImaSportsphile becasue our Bone Daddy, the original Sportsphile, who is responsible for the recording of our entire 2300 hours of vintage sports, comedy and music…..had the tremendous pleasure of seeing all 6 of this series games live….as he calls this the best baseball series he has ever seen…..and though it didn’t go 7 games…..they played enough extra innings in the series to make it almost 7 games worth of play.
Bone Daddy and his good friend Dino Berube saw all three games played in at Shea Stadium…..as the guests of Dino’s brother Dwight….who was the General Manager for the Harry M. Stevens Company…..who held the concessions and souvenirs rights at Shea Stadium…..which meant that every food concession stand and restaurant at Shea, slong with every souvenir stand a the Shea Complex was run and operated by Harry M. Stevens…..and Dwight Berube was the GM of all of their operations.
Since Bone Daddy has been an Astros fan since back in the day when they were the Colt 45’s…..and especially since Brother Diwght had gotten the Boys from Texas seats right above the Mets dugout on the 1st row of the mezzanine level…..which extended right over the dugout….so, Bone Daddy wore his Great Scott, Don’t Mets WithTexas and The Ryan Express t-shirts to all three games at Shea….while sitting “smack dab in the middle” of the Mets fans…..and considering that Bone Daddy has a voice that can be heard over any crowd….while being one of the best “razzers in baseball” who never stops yelling for his team and at the opposing team…..for that is when the New York fans threatened to toss him off the mezzanine or “piss on him”….which is why videos like this one bring back treasured memories of times had as a Sportsphile.
