“Amanda“ is a 1973 song written by Bob McDill….while being recorded by both Don Williams in 1973 and Waylon Jennings in 1974….which was Waylon Jennings’s eighth solo # 1 on the country chart. The single stayed at # 1 for three weeks on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.
As recorded by Jennings, “Amanda” had been a track on his 1974 album The Ramblin’ Man….but was not released as a single at that time….where as two other tracks, “I’m a Ramblin’ Man” and “Rainy Day Woman” were….when more than 4½ years later….new overdubs were added to the original track and placed on his first greatest hits album…..and in April 1979, the song was issued as a single….and it soon became one of the biggest country hits of 1979.
In this video herewith….singer / songwriter Don Williams performs “Amanda” live on the stage at Austin City Limits in 1980….as Don Williams was an American country singer, songwriter and 2010 inductee to the Country Music Hall of Fame….who began his solo career in 1971….while singing popular ballads….and amassing 17 # 1 country hits….with his straightforward yet smooth bass-baritone voice, soft tones and imposing build earned him the nickname of the “Gentle Giant” of country music.
