Music – 1980 – Willie Nelson + Mary Kay Place – Something To Brag About In You

DOG ASIDE:

Up to this 1977 Saturday Night Live since its inception….the weekly NBC weekend comedy that is still airing in the same time slot….had never had a female host….as it was viewed by many as a “good ole boys” program….that was until Mary Kay Place….an American actress, singer, director, and screenwriter… who was known for portraying Loretta Haggers on the television series Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman….a role that won her the 1977 prime time Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series…as she was selected by NBC and director / writer Loren Michael to be SNL’s first entry of a female host….so, being a country and western pop singer /songwriter…..Mary Kay picked the always awesome Willie Nelson to be her musical guest.

Willie Nelson came on to perform back-to-back numbers….a raucous, uptempo take on “Whiskey River” and an appropriately lonesome, bittersweet version of “Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain”….when later in the program, Mary Kay and Willie sang a duet written by Place called “Something To Brag About In You” …. and we at ImaSportsphile consider this video of that song is another “nugget of gold” in our treasure chest of memories here on our site.
