The song was covered by Ray Charles in 1962….while being featured on Charles’ Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music….and released as a single…..as Brother Ray’s version reached # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1962….and stayed there for five weeks….as this version went to # 1 on the U.S. R&B and Adult Contemporary charts….whenBillboard ranked it as the # 2 song for 1962….plus Charles’ version reached # 1 in the UK Singles Chart in July 1962….where it stayed for two weeks.
