The 34th National Basketball Association All-Star Game was played on January 29, 1984 at McNichols Sports Arena in Denver, Colorado….the home of the Denver Nuggets…..with the East squad being coached by Boston Celtics K. C. Jones….and the West squad was coached by Utah Jazz Frank Layden. Starters for the East were the Celtics C Robert Parrish and PF Larry Bird, Detroit Pistons PG Isiah Thomas, Milwaukee Bucks SG Sydney Moncrief and Philadelphia 76’ers SF Julius “Dr. J” Erving….while the starter for the West team were the Los Angeles Lakers PG Magic Johnson and C Kareem Abdule-Jabbar, Utah Jazz SF Adrian Dantley, Denver Nuggets SF Alex English and the San Antonion Spurs SG George “Iceman” Gervin….as Pistons Isiah Thomas would take home the All Star MVP trophy.
The West squad got off to a fast start and led at halftime by a score of 76 – 62….while maintaining a lead of 107 – 99 at the end of the 3rd quarter….but then the East squad kicked into high gear and tied the game at 132 – 132….thus throwing the game into overtime….and that is when the East began to dominate and eventually won by a score of 154 – 145.
CBS broadcast crew of Brett Musberger in studio….Dick Stockton and Tom Heinsohm calling the play by play action….with Roger Twibell and Dick Vitale handling interviews around McNichols Areana…..in an All Star Game that featured twelve (12) future Hall of Fame Members including K. C. Jones, Isiah Thomas, Julius Erving, Larry Bird, Robert Parrish, Benard King, Kevin McHale, Magic Johnson, George Gervin, Alex English, Ralph Sampson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar….which makes this NBA All Star Game must see television.
