DOG ASIDE:
The 1980 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships were held June 3 – 7 at Texas University Memorial Stadium in Austin, TX…. as the 58th annual NCAA-sanctioned track meet to determine the individual and team national champions of men’s collegiate Division I outdoor track and field events in the United States. This was the third time the Longhorns hosted the event….and the first since 1974.
UTEP (University of Texas El Paso) topped the team standings for the third consecutive year….thus claiming their 4th national title….while UCLA grabbed 2nd….and Florida State took home 3rd place…..as the host team of the University of Texas came in 8th place.
This was an event that Bone Daddy saw live….and he recalls some outstanding future world class athletes like sprinters James Sanford of USC, Calvin Smith of Alabama and Stanley Floyd of Auburn…who blazed to a “winner by a nose” dead heat in the 100m finals….along with Greg Foster (UCLA) and Renaldo Nehemiah (Maryland) in the 110m hurdles….and Mark Anderson (UCLA) in the decathlon and Thommie Sjoholm (UTEP) in the hammer throw.
This video also covers the 1980 NCAA Mens Volleyball Championship match between USC vs UCLA featuring many of the 1984 US Olympic Volleyball Team members….in a cross-town rivalry that is well worth the watch.
