DOG ASIDE:
During the heyday of Southwest Conference Football….the Longhorns and the Aggies tee’d it up against each other in their annual Thanksgiving Day battle….where a history of college football rivalry unlike any other in the State of Texas….a place where football is KING….and a place where history is written every football season….on Friday night in high school….and on Saturday’s at colleges throughout the State.
This 1986 SWC Game of the Week was played on November 27, 1986 at Texas Memorial Stadium in front of a sellout crowd of 77,236….as Aggie Coach Jackie Sherrill led his team to a 16 – 3 victory over Coach Fred Akers Texas Longhorn squad….as the Longhorns finished the regular season with an 5–6 record….the 1st losing season at Texas since 1956….the year before Longhorn coaching legend Darrell Royal became head coach of the Horns. After the Aggies beat the Horns on this night in Austin….Texas parted ways with Coach Fred Akers….as Jackie Sherrill’s Aggie squad would sew-up the SWC Championship with a 7 – 1 record….and go to the annual Cotton Bowl Classic to beat the Ohio State Buckeyes by a score of 28 – 12….for this was a really good A&M team that is well worth watching.
