The 1988 Orange Bowl featured “Game of the Century” type billing….as the undefeated and # 1 ranked Oklahoma Sooners faced off against undefeated and # 2 ranked Miami for the national championship. Now, with the national championship on the line, Miami sought to make it three-losses-in-three-years for Oklahoma….and also their first postseason bowl win under Coach Jimmy Johnson after three straight bowl losses….two in which they struggled and lost their chances to win the national championships….plus the fire between these two super powerrs of college football was fueled by growing personal animosity between former Arkansas players and teammates in Miami Coach Jimmy Johnson and Oklahoma Coach Barry Switzer.
This video seen herewith showcases the Miami Hurricanes offense….which was formidable at worst….. being led by such college greats as QB Vinny Testaverde…..who would go on to win the Heisman Trophy….running backs Melvin Bratton and Alonzo Highsmith….and future NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin.
