Since this 1985 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships were contested in March at the Texas Swimming Center at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas…..like all things Texas here at ImaSportsphile….especially all things Austin, TX….which makes this a very special video to this lil ole chiweenie Sportsphile……cuz Bone Daddy, the original Sportsphile, was born and bred in Texas…..honed and sharpened in West Texas while being raised in “hard country” in and around Midland, TX while growing up….and educated and matured as a resident of Austin for some 50 years….which makes this video “pure golf” in our treasure chest of memories here at ImaSportsphile.
Heck, Bone Daddy saw this entire competition live at the Texas Swim Center….where more national championship banners fly today in 2018 (14 since 1981 to 2018)….for this the 62nd annual NCAA sanctioned swim meet to determine the team and individual national champions of Division I men’s collegiate swimming and diving in the USA . The men’s and women’s titles would not be held at the same site until 2006. Stanford topped the team standings….as the Cardinal’s captured their second men’s title and first since 1967. Bone Daddy recalls seeing such American swimming greats at Matt Biondi, John Moffett, Rick Carey, Steve Lundquist and Rowdy Gaines….which amounts to a virtual Whose Who in men’s college swimming during the decade of the 1980’s….as he often refers to this championship as the event that put the awesome swimming and diving facilities at the University of Texas on the map…. as we assume this event helped Texas men’s swimming recruit for now coaching legend Eddie Reese…for this was a great event in a great venue….cuz everybody likes to come to Austin.
