DOG COMMENTARY:

The 1986 NCAA men’s basketball tournament Midwest Regional Finals featured two icons of college coaching in Larry Brown at Kansas University and Jim Valvano at North Carolina State University…..as Valvano led his Wolfpack team to the National Championship in 1983…..and Brown would lead his Jayhawks team to the National Championship just two years later with “Danny and the Miracles” in 1988.  Jimmy V’s team came into this Midwest Regional finals game with a 21 – 12 record….after going 7 – 7 in the ACC…..while Larry Brown’s team came into this game with a 34 – 4 record …..after winning the Big 8 Conference with a 13 – 1 record.

NC State featured a “twin-towers” type of team featuring 6’11” C Chris Washburn (17.6 pts 6.7 rebs) and 6’10” C Charles Shackleford (10.1 pts 6.1 rebs) down in the block….with 6’5″ Nate McMillan (9.4 pts 4.6 rebs 6.9 assists)….and 6’5″ G Ernie Myers (9.3 pts 2.9 rebs 2.9 asst)….with 6’8″ F Bennie Bolton (8.7 pts 3.0 rebs)…..as McMillan would go on to play for the Seattle Super Sonics from 1986 – 1999….and then become an NBA coach from 1999 to the current 2018 season (Indiana Pacers).

Kansas featured equal, if not better, “twin towers” down in the block with 6’10” F/C Danny Manning (16.7 pts 6.3 rebs 2.4 asst) and 7’1″ C Greg Dreiling (11.6 pts 6.7 rebs)….who along with 6’5″ G Ron Kellogg (15.9 pts 3.4 rebs 2.8 asst)….along with 6’0″ G Cedric Hunter (9.1 pts 3.6 rebs 6.7 asst)….and 6’6″ F Calvin Thompson (13.4 pts 4.5 rebs 3.0 asst)….which made up the Jayhawks starting five. Larry Brown had a freshman guard on this team, Mark Turgeon, who would become a college coach in 1989….and still is today in 2018 at the helm for the Maryland Terrapins of the ACC.

This video features CBS Sports legendary college basketball broadcast team of Brent Musburger and Billy Packer calling the game…..with Jim Nance and Pat O’brien in the studio for other NCAA Regional Finals updates….as the Kansas Jayhawks would win this 1986 Midwest Regional Finals game by a score of 75 – 67.
