At the US Olympic Trials in 1972….Eddie Hart and Rey Robinson repeated their duo-held world record running of the 100 m in 9.9 seconds….and were both favored to win the race at the Olympic Games in Munich….but they were both eliminated in the 100 m race because their coach, Stan Wright….who unknowingly used an outdated Olympic schedule to determine the starting time of their quarterfinal heat….thus failing to deliver them to the track on time…. which was due to disorganization….and created a great deal of controversy.
Eddie Hart also ran the anchoring leg in the American 4 × 100 m relay team….which won him a gold medal….while their team equalled the United States’ own world record of 38.19.
In 2017 Hart released a book, Disqualified: Eddie Hart, Munich 1972, and the Voices of the Most Tragic Olympics about his Olympic experience.
