This ABC coverage of the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics took place on Day 10 of the Games….with Jim Lampley, Mark Spitz and Donna de Varona at poolside while covering the swimming finals of the men’s 200m individual medley competition…which was won by Canada’s Alex Baumann as he took home gold….with USA Pablo Morales winning the silver medal….and Ireland’s Neil Cochran taking home bronze.
The telecast then shifts to the Los Angeles Coliseum for track and field competition in the womens 800m race competition with the semifinal heats….as covered by Al Michaels and Frank Shorter featuring USA Kim Gallagher, the eventual silver medal winner, and teammate Ruth Wysochi…..along with Romanians Doina Melinte, the eventual gold medal winner….and teammate Fita Lovin, who garnered the bronze.
The program then shifts back to the swim center with Lampley, Spitz and de Varona for the womens final in the 200m butterfly….featuring Madame Butterfly USA Mary T. Meagher, who captures the gold medal….along with Australia’s Karen Phillips winning silver…..and West Germany’s Ina Beyermann finishing with the bronze.
All in all, this was another example of top shelf coverage of the 1984 L A Games by ABC Sports….and gives the Olympic viewer another well presented touch of class….making this a video will worth watching.
