Olympics – 1984 L A Games – Women’s Field Hockey & Swimming & Heptalon – Mens Cycling & Wrestling

DOG ASIDE:

This women’s field hockey match between the USA vs Netherlands feature two teams that would eventually win medals…..as the Dutch women would go on to win gold….while the American women would take home the bronze medal….which was quite an accomplishment for the USA side…..who had never medaled in Olympic women’s field hockey before. The USA team included Beth Anders, Beth Beglin, Regina Buggy, Gwen Cheeseman, Sheryl Johnson, Christine Larson-Mason, Kathleen McGahey, Anita Miller, Leslie Milne, Charlene Morett, Diane Moyer, Marcella Place, Karen Shelton, Brenda Stauffer, Julie Staver, and Judy Strong….as the USA team would win the bronze medal match on penalty stroke competition while defeatin Australia 10-5.

In the women’s swimming 200m individual medley competition….the USA’s Tracy Caukins won the gold medal in Olympic Record time of 2:12.64…..while teammate Nancy Hogshead won silver….as Michelle Pearson of Australia took the bronze medal home.

The men’s 4 km team pursuit cycling event at the 1984 Summer Olympics took place from 2 to 3 August and was one of eight cycling events at the 1984 Olympics. The qualification and quarter finals were on 2 August and the semi finals and finals on 3 August ….when the Australian team took the gold medal…..as the USA team of David Grylls, Steve Hegg, Patrick McDonough, Leonard Nitz and Brent Emery took home silver…..and the West German team won bronze.

Jeffrey Carl “Jeff” Blatnick was an American super heavyweight Greco-Roman wrestler and sports commentator….who won the NCAA Division II heavyweight wrestling championships in 1978 and 1979….and won the Olympic gold medal in Greco-Roman super heavyweight wrestling in 1984 after battling back from cancer….as Blatnick is featured in an in studio interrview with ABC’s Kathleen Sullivan.

The women’s track heptathlon event was won by Glynis Nunn of Australia….with USA Jackie Joyner taking home the silver medal…. while West German Sabine Everts won bronze.  This video covers the 100m hurdles competition of the women’s heptathlon competition.
