This particular men’s basketball game in the 1984 Olympics provided the ticket to the gold medal game….and the USA squad coached by Bobby Knight….included a roster made up of 12 outstanding college players…..including Steve Alford, Leon Wood, Patrick Ewing, Vernon Fleming, Alvin Robertson, Michael Jordan, Joe Kleine, Jon Koncak, Wayman Tisdale, Chris Mullin, Sam Perkins and Jeff Turner.
In the preliminary round of the Olympic competition the American beat China 97 – 49 on July 29th…..then on July 31, they spanked Canada 89 – 68…..followed by a drubbing of France on August 3rd by the score of 120 – 62….and in their final preliminary round game against eventual finals opponent, Spain on August 4th…..the US won handily with a score of 101 – 68……so, simply put, these guys were not even challenged to break a sweat before they entered the knockout round.
