ABC diving commentators Cynthia Potter and Jack Whitaker provide a great deal of insight as to why from dive 5th to the 10th round of dives…..there is no degree of difficulty….so the divers can do as difficult a dive as they choose….to which USA Greg Louganis and CHN Li Hongping are doing the most difficult last 6 dives….with USA Bruce Kimball not far behind.
CHN Tong Hui…who is 8th after the first 4 rounds of dives….performs a forward 3 1/2 somersault in pike position…..followed by USA Greg Louganis performing an arm-stand reverse 1 1/2….then comes MEX Miguel Zavala in 11th place doing a back 1 1/2 somersault with 3 1/2 twists….(sounds like a tough dive to me!)….with Zavala being followed by 13 year old Alaeddin Soueidan of Syria….who won the hearts of the predominately USA fans….doing a hand-stand cut-through one somersault…..followed by AUS Steve Foley doing a forward 3 1/2 somersault….then comes CAN Dave Bedard with a reverse 3 1/2 tuck….which was the toughest degree of difficulty in the prelim competition at 3.4 degree….as Bedard was followed by Li Kongzheng of China….who is 3rd at this point in the competition. Next dives Christopher Snode of Great Britain doing a inward 2 1/2 somersault….followed by Isao Yamagishi of Japan….and last but not least…USA Bruce Kimball….who ultimately won silver in this competition.
