By the time that the round of the 6th dive in the 1984 Olympics men’s 3 m springboard competition rolled around…..USA Greg Louganis had already separated himself from the rest of the Olympic competitor field…..and the rest of the divers were relegated to vying for the silver and bronze medal….as Louganis was simply “head and shoulders” better than the rest of the field. On the other hand….USA Ron Merriott was locked into a battle with China’s Li Hongzheng and Tan Liagarde….which would go until the 11th and final dive before the winner of the silver and bronze medal was decided….in a true Olympic slug-fest.
