Olympics – 1984 Los Angeles – Track – Mens 400m 2nd Round – Antonio McKay & Alonso Babers

Antonio McKay Sr. (born February 9, 1964 in Atlanta, Georgia) is a former track and field athlete who specialized in the 400 meters….having won All-American honors competing for Georgia Tech….as he was the NCAA champion both indoors and outdoors in 1984. He won at the United States Olympic Track Trials….thus qualifying for the 1984 US Olympic Team.  At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics….he won the bronze medal in the 400 m behind USA Alonzo Babers and Ivory Coast Gabriel Tiacoh.  He teamed up with Babers in the 4×400-meter relay event and he led the team home to victory winning his first Olympic gold medal.

Alonzo C. Babers (born October 31, 1961) is an American former 400m track athlete….who won two gold medals at the 1984 Summer Olympics….in the 400 m race and the 4 × 400 m relay.  At the USA Final Olympic Trials in Los Angeles….he won his semi-final in a personal best of 44.95….and later in the final….he ran another personal best of 44.86 to qualify to the Olympic team.  At the Los Angeles Olympic Games he further lowered his personal best to 44.75 when he won his quarter-final…..and in the Olympic final….Babers ran 44.27 to win the gold medal.  In the 4 × 400 m relay….the United States won the gold medal easily in 2:57.91….with Babers running the 3rd leg.
