Olympics – 1984 Los Angeles – Wrestling – 74kg Freestyle – USA David Schultz VS YUG Saban Sejdiu

DOG ASIDE:

I have to apologize once again…..cuz this is another video that sounds like Bone Daddy recorded it under water….but this freestyle wrestling match at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics…..was between the guy that would win the gold medal…..against the guy that would eventually win the bronze…..as neither wrestler had had a point score against them to this point in the tournament.

Šaban Sejdiu is a former freestyle wrestler….who competed in the 1976 Montreal Olympics, in the 1980 Moscow Olympics, in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and in the 1988 Seoul Olympics….as he received bronze medals in both the Moscow and Los Angeles Olympics.  Sejdiu was born in Blatse, SFR Yugoslavia and is of Albanian heritage…..and was part of the Liria Wrestling Club….and trained by notable coaches Mentaz Allajbegu and Hajrush Sinani….who had also trained notable wrestlers Shaban Tërstena, Bajram Qorrolli, Abdulla Mehmeti, Mustaf Syla, Shend Kamberi and Adnan Elezi.  Sejdiu also competed in the 1977 World Wrestling Championships and 1981 Skopje….and received silver medals in both. Soviet wrestler and Olympic and Worlds gold medalist, Saypulla Absaidov stopped him in both finals of the Moscow Olympics and the 1981 World Wrestling Championships.

David Leslie “Dave” Schultz was an American Olympic and world champion freestyle wrestler….who was a seven-time World and Olympic medalist.  Dave and his brother Mark Schultz….also a wrestler….were noted for both winning gold at the same Olympics (1984). The Schultzs’ were the only brothers….other than Buvaisar and Adam Saitiev and Anatoli and Sergei Beloglazov….to win both World and Olympic championships. The Schultz brothers won more NCAA, U.S. Open, World, and Olympic titles than any American brother combination in history.

After his brilliant career….Dave Schultz coached individuals and teams at the college level and also privately. He was shot and killed by John Eleuthère du Pont in 1996…. a millionaire philanthropist….who sponsored the private Foxcatcher wrestling team at an amateur sports center known as Foxcatcher Farm….which du Pont hadset up on his estate in Pennsylvania…a sad end to one of America’s best freestyle wrestlers of all time.
