The 1990 FIFA World Cup was played in Italy…..as Group F featured the Netherlands, England, the Republic of Ireland and Egypt. In the six group games….where no team managed to score more than once in a match….as England beat Egypt 1–0, thanks to a 58th-minute goal from Mark Wright….which was a goal good enough to win the group.
In the 1st Round of Group F….which was played on June 16, 1990 in match played in Cagliari, Italy between the England and Holland at the Stadio Sant’Elia…..where the Brits and the Dutch played another Group F defensive battle to a 0 – 0 tie….thus helping England win Group F….as the Netherlands went on to finish 2nd in a tie with the Republic of Ireland with identical records….thus allowing both teams along with England to be assured of moving on to the Knockout Stage of the 1990 World Cup. In the Knockout Stage, the England team proceeded to beat Belguim 1 – 0 in the round of 16…..then scored a 3 – 2 victory over Cameroon in the quarterfinals…..only to lose to West Germany in the semi-final round on penalty kicks 4 – 3 after tying 1 – 1 in regulation time of the 1990 World Cup….cuz for each game in the knockout stage….any draw at 90 minutes was followed by 30 minutes of extra time….and if the scores were still level there would be a penalty shoot-out (at least five penalties each, and more if necessary) to determine who progressed to the next round.
In the match between England vs Belguim…..as seen in the 1st half in this video below….the game was a hotly contested defensive battle….finally won by an English score late in the 2nd half….which means that any soccer fan worth their weight in excitement ofworld class soccer should enjoy watching once again.
