Special – 1985 – CBS Year in Sports – Pete Rose 4192 & Lakers Vs Celtics & Hagler Vs Hearns

DOG COMMENTARY:

1985 was an outstanding year in sports….as this CBS Sports Special provides undeniable evidence of that statement….. for it was in this year in Major League Baseball alone that Pete Rose broke Ty Cobb’s long standing hits record of 4192 hits….while White Sox P Tom Seaver and NYY P Phil NieKro won their 300th game to become the 9th and 10th pitchers in MLB history to accomplish the feat of 300 wins….plus Angels 1B Rod Carew recorded his 3,000 hit to become only the 16th player in MLB history to do so….and top that off, Royals 3B George Brett recorded an American League MVP and Gold Glove winner while leading the K C Royals to their 1st ever World Series Championship.

The year 1985 also provided a classic Larry Bird vs Magic Johnson NBA Finals Championship….as the Lakers under the tutiledge of coach Pat Riley wrestled the title back from Celtics coach K C Jone’s Celtics in 4 – 2 gmes series….after losing in a 7 game series to the Celtics the year before. ┬áIn golf, the majors were won by four different golfers….Ray Floyd, Curtis Strange, Mark O’Meara and Berhard Langer…..while John McEnroe and Martina Navritalova were dominant in tennis…..and Ingrid Kristiansen set a world record in womens marathon in London with a time of 2:21.06….as Mary Decker Slaney defeated Zola Budd in the womens 3000m at the World Championship competitiona…..and on the weekend of November 3, 1985, the top five teams in NCAA football were 1. Florida 2. Penn State, 3. Nebraska, 4. Ohio State and 5. Air Force…..when USA Greg LeMond rode to the 1st ever Tour de France cycling competition won by an American….as LeMond beat 5 time winner Bernard Hinault in a classic battle that went right down to the wire.

CBS also provides the view of this video with a lookback at 1984 Olympic gold medal winners Carl Lewis (4 gold track & field – 100m, 200m, 4 x 100m relay and broad jump)….Mary Lou Retton (1 womens gymnastics all around gold) and Bill Johnson (1 gold mens snow ski downhill).

1985 was an awesome year in boxing….with some literally legendary title fights like Middleweights Marvelous Marvin Hagler vs Thomas Hearns….Lightweights Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini vs Livingstone Bramble…..Welterweight Don Curry vs Milt McCrory in a fight that unified the title for the 1st time in 10 years…..Heavyweights Larry Holmes vs Michael Spinks as Holmes was going for his 49 win with zero losses to tie boxing legend Rocky Marciano ….and Light Welterweights Alexis Arguello vs Aaron Pryor…..as CBS provides a wonderful look at the trials and tribulations of boxing legend Alexis Arguello.

Any way you cut the pie….this video is well worth the view….for in this CBS Sports telecast…..the fans get to hear from an awesome braodcasting staff including John Tesh as host, Brent Musberger on Baseball, Tom Heinsohm and Dick Stockton on the NBA, Tim Ryan on boxing, Pat Hayden and Jim Namce on NCAA football…..plus John Madden’s most exciting moments of the year….for this truly is an all star lineup of broadcasters.

Simply put, this is a wonderful highlights video of the top stories in sports during the year of 1985..
